THE RIDE BACK TO THE Island was quiet. The chatty driver was probably too exhausted from waiting for much longer than he had thought and seemed just eager to get her to her destination. She had been surprised to find that the car was still outside the lounge by the time she emerged, the driver sleeping in a fetal position on his reclined seat. Nkechi appreciated the silence. She wanted to think through everything, but her head felt thick and hazy, like a harmattan morning. The two glasses of the alcohol she had gulped down in quick succession were taking their toll. Usually, when she and Nick went to banquets, she held a glass of wine but rarely took a sip. Now, worried about the smell on her breath, she brought out some menthol gum from her purse and tossed one into her mouth. Her chewing worsened the headache, though, so she wound down the window, hoping the cool breeze on her face would make her feel better. It didnât.
She was heading straight to Heavenâs Gate Cathedral, where sheâd left her car. Her plan had been to slip in and join the midweek service, but all she wanted to do was go into her office and take a nap.
What was she supposed to do with all the information Agent X had given her? He gave her two flash drives before sheâd left the lounge. The first held details of his investigation on Felixâs death, the people he spoke with, and their conclusion. And the second, heâd promised, consisted of other incriminating information. She had hesitated to take the flash drives. Her head was already full. A lot of things ran through her mind. She felt guilty all over again for Felixâs death. And the fact that she lived with a killer scared her. She wondered if Felix was a one-off, something done out of anger or jealously, or if murder was something her husband had in him for various occasions. She feared for what he might do if he ever found out she had been snooping on him, and her fear turned into anger. She had to do something with the information. She owed it to Felix. She owed it to herself. Leaving him quietly and relocating abroad, the option she had been mulling over, was now out of the question. She needed to ruin him. She just needed to figure out how.
All she knew was that she needed to be careful. She couldnât act on impulse and do something stupid. She had not realized she was muttering until the driver pulled over by the side of the road and asked her if she was okay. She shook her head as if trying to shake herself out of a trance and forced a smile. As the car re-joined the road, she chewed her lip and stared out the window. Streetlights lined the road, fizzling every couple of moments as if the bulbs would go out any moment and plunge her into the darkness.
